WHAT CAUSES CONSTANT CLEAR RUNNY NOSE?
Clear constant runny nose from both nostrils, worse after certain meals or after exposure to allergens, can occur from a condition called vasomotor rhinitis or from allergic rhinitis. Typically, with allergic rhinitis the runny nose is associated with exposure to allergens and is therefore more episodic. With vasomotor rhinitis, it is a more constant daily thing. This type of runny nose is different from having runny nose only from one side of the nose which could be brain fluid called CSF leaking from the brain into the sinuses or nose and needs immediate attention. Runny nose from the front of the nose is also different from postnasal drip or phlegm. Smoke, spicy foods, weather changes, hormone changes, stress, drugs such as antidepressants, beta-blockers, etc can cause these symptoms as well.
WHAT IS VASOMOTOR RHINITIS?
VMR is a condition where the balance between the two nervous systems called the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system may be altered resulting in the nasal congestion, watery drippy nose and postnasal drip. This autonomic system causes stimulation of the glands and mucus/secretory cells within the nasal mucus lining increasing the watery secretions. Because allergic rhinitis or rhinitis from allergies can also produce similar symptoms, it is important to differentiate the two.

WHAT CAN I TRY TO REDUCE THE CONGESTION AND RUNNY NOSE?
Nasal steroid sprays or ipratropium spray may improve this. If the runny nose and congestion are from allergic rhinitis sometimes a trial of azelastine spray may help or OTC second or third generation antihistamines may provide relief.
